Carter Horne is one of the singers who auditioned for Season 16 of The Voice.

His audition: Carter Lloyd Horne, 19, of Marietta, Ga., auditioned with “Drinkin’ Problem” by Midland. Sounding much older than he looks, Carter coaxed chair turns from Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton. Blake said he sounded nervous early in the performance, but pulled it together nicely. Carter opted to join Team Blake.

More about Carter:

* In his Voice bio package, Carter said he grew up in a well-off family, but that they lost nearly everything in the recession. They wound up living in a motel for a while.

* It was at that time that Carter turned to music.

* In the past year, he’s competed in the finale of an undiscovered artist showcase at the Madlife Stage and Studios in Woodstock, Ga., and has been a featured musician at an Atlanta’s Emerging Artists show at the Hungry Ear Coffeehouse.

* He generally posts covers to his Instagram page and apparently prefers recording them in a parking garage because of the acoustics there.

* But he made an exception and posted a snippet of a fine original back in July, and you might say it’s a special song, the first one he ever wrote.
“It was inspired by my great grandfather’s stories from before he left to fight in World War II,” Carter writes. Carter calls it “Darling;” his dad calls it “Soldier Song.”

* Carter says his musical inspiration is Chris Stapleton, Harry Styles, Midland, James Bay and The Rolling Stones. He describes his original music as “kinda soulful country rock.”

* As for his audition song, Carter told Voice Views “it’s just a fun tongue and cheek song, and I really really enjoy it. Not to mention Midland is one of my favorite bands ever.”

* Entering his blind audition, Carter said Blake was actually his last choice for a coach. “But after actually getting to speak to him I was sold. I love that he started coaching me right there on stage when he said there were a few pitch things.”
