NBC’s new music show “Songland” debuted with strong ratings Tuesday night.

With the premiere of “America’s Got Talent” as its lead-in, “Songland” earned a 1.2 rating among 19-49 year olds.

That’s the second highest rating of the night behind “Got Talent.” “Songland,” airing in NBC’s 10 p.m. time slot, drew nearly 6 million viewers.

To put the 1.2 rating in perspective, The Voice exceeded that number just three times over the final 17 episodes of Season 16.

Apparently on each week’s episode of “Songland,” an established artist will be pitched songs by four songwriters, each hopeful that the artist will pick his or her song to record.

On night one, the artist was Voice coach John Legend. He decided to team up with Teddy Burrows to record her song “We Need Love.”

“Songland” differs from a typical music competition show in that it doesn’t appear that the competition extends before a single episode.

That being the case, it’ll be interesting to see if those ratings hold. Adam Levine, who recently announced his departure from The Voice is an executive producer.
