Avery Wilson, Season 3, The Voice

Meet Avery Wilson of Team Cee Lo on The Voice

2

Avery Wilson, 16, of Hamden, Conn., told The Voice he came from a family of dancers and danced himself when he was young.

But he’d sing, in his room. Then, one day, his father proclaimed: “You aren’t a dancer; you are a singer.”

Avery has been pursuing music ever since and says he considers himself somewhere between Stevie Wonder, Chris Brown and Usher and is looking forward to getting vocal training from one of the judges.

He sang “Without You” for his audition and quickly demonstrated an impressive range that prompted three judges to spin their chairs. And, by the time his performance ended, all four judges were facing his way.

One of the stars of the fourth audition episode, he chose Cee Lo for his coach.

What the show didn’t show: First and foremost, that Avery released a 12-track R&B album called “On Top of the World” to iTunes in August 2012. It includes an impressive a cappella version of a song called “Flawless.” On Facebook, he writes that he’s been performing since age 7. On his YouTube channel, he says that “as a bonus” he writes music and plays instruments. Head to Facebook to listen to full-length versions of some of his original work. Head to YouTube channel to hear him covering songs like Usher’s “Climax” and Rihanna’s “You Da One.”
