Song by song grades for Team Kelly on The Voice

0

Seventeen singers took the stage Monday night on The Voice.

By the end of the tomorrow night, only nine will remain.

The top vote-getter from each team will advance. Then each coach will save an artist.

Tuesday’s show will conclude with performances by the next highest vote-getter from each team competing or an instant save.

Who deserves to advance from Team Kelly?

Here are my song by song grades:

Corey Ward (a Team Kelly original), “Bruises” by Lewis Capaldi — As impressive as Corey has been in Season 19, it’s hard to believe he auditioned in Season 18 and failed to turn a chair. Here, he delivered a solid vocal, showed great stage presence and, most of all, delivered a passionate performance. Grade: A–

Gihanna Zoe (a Team Kelly original), “Always Remember Us This Way” by Lad Gaga — Gihanna’s just 17 and shows tons of star potential, not to mention a wonderful sweet spot in her vocals. But this song is all about emotion, and her delivery was just a bit too frill-filled for my liking. Not all of those frills were executed perfectly. Grade: B–.

Kenzie Wheeler (a Team Kelly original), “Red Dirt” by Brooks and Dunn — Might Kelly coach a country singer to victory on The Voice for a third time? Voice voters love male country singers, and Kenzie doesn’t have lots of competition in that respect. He also delivers really pleasant, deep country vocals, which were on full display in this performance. Grade: B

Zae Romeo (stolen in the knockout round), “When I Look at You” by Miley Cyrus — This was a surprisingly shaky vocal from Zae, who has sounded more on point in all of his previous Voice performances. Delivering with passion, however, wasn’t a problem. I’m wondering if some of these singers might be swinging for a few two many vocal “moments” in a 2:30 performance. Grade: C

Savanna Woods (Kelly’s rep in the 4-way knockout), “Barracuda” by Heart — Savanna did not win the 4-way knockout, but her song is on iTunes.
