About Maelyn:
* As we learned during her Voice bio, Maelyn is deaf in her right ear. That’s the result of an infection she got at age 2. But she’s learned to cope and now calls it “kind of like a super power.”
* Mealyn was raised in Texas and started performing around age 5 in local theaters, she says in a 2015-16 Kickstarter campaign.
* When she was 17 — around 2010 — she had an opportunity to move to New York to work on a new musical, signed with an agent and she now calls New York home.
* She performed at Carnegie Hall twice before she turned 18 and toured with Tony-nominated Ramin Karimloo, who has played the lead in Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables. In addition to musical theater, she’s done a bit of acting and previously performed as Maddy Jarmon.
* In her Kickstarter pitch, Maelyn says after moving to New York, “I slowly began to realize my real passion was song-writing.” The Kickstarter campaign was successful, but neither an EP or album has landed yet.
* As simply Maelyn, she has released two singles — “Last Call” in 2016 and “Ayo” in 2017. The former is no longer available, but you can listen to a snippet on Maelyn’s Facebook page. You can also check out one of her newer originals, “Dreamboats,” below.
* Oh, and if you want another example of how powerful a vocalist, Maelyn is, just check out this song snippet on her Instagram page. Wow!
* Maelyn plans to release an EP later this year. She described her sound this way to Voice Views: “I’m definitely a singer-songwriter at heart. I write my songs on piano and guitar and then bring them in the studio where I like to really get creative and think outside the box. I’m working with a producer right now, Emiliano Flowerman, and he and I sample natural sounds as well as acoustic instruments and bring in some synthy/808 vibes. So, (slightly) electro-pop with some singer-songwriter soul.”
* Maelyn called the feedback to her blind audition “overwhelming and amazing. Having that kind of reaction from artists I respect so much was validating and also incredibly humbling.”
* As for choosing John Legend, Maelyn told Voice Views: “Aside from being an EGOT, I chose John because he is a story teller. He really lives for the music and has such a wonderful understanding of song writing. He has also managed to be so successful and maintain a healthy home life.”
* This isn’t Maelyn’s first attempt at a singing show. At age 16, she won a Dallas-Fort Worth Idol competition and won a first-in-line audition for the real show. “I didn’t make it through the first round, and as upset as I was, I’m so glad I didn’t make it and I had time to find myself as a person and an artist,” Maelyn told Voice Views.
