Jacquie Roar and Corii dodged eliminated when they were stolen by Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani, respectively, on Tuesday’s episode of The Voice.
Bias, Stee, Ms. Monet, Julia Roome, Alison Albrecht and Kristen Brown won their battles, earning spots in the three-way knockouts that follow the battles.
Here’s a recap, minus videos until The Voice decides to post them. Following the links will take you to a profile of each singer, complete with information on the music they’ve already released.
THERE HAD TO BE A STEAL
TEAM GWEN
The match: Bias vs. Jacquie Roar
The song: “Need a Favor” by Jelly Roll
The background: Jacquie, 37, of North Plains, Oregon, turned four chairs during the blinds. Bias, 23, of Little Rock, Ark., earned two chair turns.
The feedback: John Legend called the performance “electric.” He gave a slight edge to Bias based on his star power. Niall Horan gave Bias a slight edge too. Reba gave the advantage to Jacquie.
The decision: Gwen declared Bias the winner, complimenting him for being weird and cool. But Reba swooped in and stole Jacquie, after she made the bold move of asking for a steal.
My take: Wow, simply fabulous on both singers’ part. Early, I thought Bias had a clear edge because of his distinct tone, combined with great stage presence. But Jacquie did a stupendous job of building the song’s dynamics. And between her glory notes and Jacquie Roar roar, the only thing I cared about when the battle ended was that both singers deservingly advance.
THE COACH GOT IT WRONG
TEAM NIALL
The match: Julia Roome vs. Olivia Eden
The song: “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer
The background: Julia, 13 of Warwick, N.Y., turned two chairs during the blinds. Olivia, 15, of Long Valley, N.J., was also a two-chair turn.
The feedback: John said both are going to be great, but gave the edge to Julia. Gwen said they both have interesting tones, originality that can’t be learn. Niall said they did so well, he struggled to select a winner.
The decision: Niall declared Julia the winner. Oivia was eliminated.
My take: Both singers — 13 and 15 — should be applauded for the way they handled the high-pressure performance. Both ran into pitch issues. I would have given the edge to Olivia for having a bit more unique sound.
THE COACHES GOT IT RIGHT
TEAM REBA
The match: Ms. Monet vs. Corii
The song: “New Attitude” by Patti LaBelle
The background: Ms. Monet, 50, of Pittsburgh, Calif., turned two chairs in the blinds. Corii, 32, of Moorestown, N.J., turned one with an audition that was montaged.
The feedback: Niall gave Corii the edge for the growth she showed between the blinds and the battle. John called the performance “so great” and Ms. Monet “consistently amazing.”
The decision: Reba advanced Ms. Monet. Niall and Gwen both tried to steal Corii. She decided to join Team Gwen.
My take: Great song choice for these two. And, wow, move Ms. Monet right into the playoffs after that performance. I’d say her stage experience came through loud and clear. So did those great vocals. Kudos to Corii too. That’s one way to make sure you don’t get montaged twice in a row.
TEAM JOHN
The match: Stee vs. Willie Gomez
The song: “Tacones Rojo” by Sebastian Yatra, featuring John Legend
The background: Stee, 34, of Bluffton, S.C., turned four chairs in the blinds. Willie, 37, of Miami, Fla., turned four chairs as well.
The feedback: Reba gave Willie a slight edge but applauded both singers. Niall also gave him the edge for being a complete package. Gwen leaned toward Stee calling his vocals “perfecThe decision: John declared Stee the winner; Willie was eliminated.
My take: I wasn’t a fan of the song choice. But Stee showed off nice range, great stage presence and a bit more vocal control. Oh, I also liked how he showed such great sportsmanship by thanking Willie for helping make it a great performance in that brief post-battle interview.
TEAM REBA
The match: Alison Albrecht vs. Angelina Nazarian
The song: “You Say” by Lauren Daigle
The background: Alison, 23, of Novi, Mich., turned one chair in the blinds. Angelina, 17, of Ann Arbor, Mich., turned two.
The feedback: Niall gave Alison the edge. Gwen said they were both “so, so good,” but also leaned toward Alison. John called it “so powerful.” Reba congratulated them both for a superb performance.
The decision: Reba declared Alison the winner; Angelina was eliminated.
My take: I think Reba got this one right. Both singers were impressive, but I think Alison did a bit better job or portraying the emotion of the song.
TEAM GWEN
The match: Kristen Brown vs. Juliette Ojeda
The song: “That’s the Way it Is” by Celine Dion
The background: Kristen, 24, of Roseville, Calif., turned two chairs in the blinds. Juliette, 20, of Hialeah, Fla., turned three as well.
The feedback: John gave Kristen the edge. Niall called it “magic.” Reba called them both “absolutely wonderful” without voicing a favorite. Niall didn’t pick either. The decision: Gwen declared Kristen the winner, Juliette was eliminated.
My take: Gwen got this one right. Kristen showed off great vocal firepower, but also a very pretty tone when the song went soft at one point. With a touch of country twang here and there on a Celine Dion song.
Special Note: This battle took part on day three of battle round tapings, when only one steal (John’s second) remained in play.
