American Idol introduced viewers to 10 more Hollywood-bound contestants Sunday on the fourth audition episode of Season 20.
Here’s Idol Chatter’s picks for the Top 5 performances of the night.
1. Douglas Mills, 18, Houston, Texas: Several singers hit all the right notes on Sunday’s show. But Douglas served up the perfect combination of vocals and emotion in one of the best auditions we’ve seen so far in Season 20. His cover of Milt Raskin’s “Strange Fruit” was rewarded with a well-deserved standing ovation. Katy Perry labeled the audition “iconic.” Head here for a profile on Douglas.
2. Kevin Gullage, 23, New Orleans: Kevin fronts a blues band back home, and his comfort performing was evident during his audition. Oh, he also sounded great on a cover of Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” He delivered the night’s most professional performance. Head here for a profile of Kevin, who’s already released music.
3. Sam Moss, 25, Winteset, Iowa: Sam auditioned in Austin, got only a single yes from Katy and somehow wound up auditioning again in another city. This time, she performed an original, perhaps titled “Goodbye is Not Good By Me.” Well, guess what? It’s a great song and Sam sounded great singing it, convincing Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie that Katy was right all along. Sam breezed to Hollywood unanimously this time. Head here for a profile of Sam, who’s already released music.
4. Jacob Moran, 27, Dansville, Mich.: Jacob was also featured during the Season 17 audition shows and advanced to the final day of Hollywood before getting the boot. He came back 60 pounds lighter and confident enough in his vocal ability to tackle Katy Perry’s “Rise.” He showed off tons of range, plenty of vocal firepower and got a standing ovation from the original singer of the song. Welcome back, Jacob. Head here for a profile on Jacob.
5. Dan Marshall Griffith, 24, Chesapeake, Va.: You could almost see the Idol judges salivating over the potential marketability of Dan. After all, he’s a football player turned country singer who’s blessed with a rich, deep voice that sounds fabulous in his chosen genre. And the show didn’t even mention that he grew up in a Marine Corp family. Luke Bryan was right; he’s raw, having performed only a handful of shows. But the Idol judges seem eager to mold their Season 20 cast. Head here for a profile on Dan.
Also advancing to Hollywood on Sunday’s show were Zareh, Thomas Patrick Moran, Fritz Hager, Haley Slaton and Elli Rowe.
