Season 20 kicks off Sunday, Feb. 27, on ABC. Here’s more about Betty.
* Betty Maxwell is the 27-year-old’s married name. As Betty Cantrell, she won the Miss Georgia title in 2015 and, in September 2015, was named Miss America for 2016.
* She performed the aria “Tu? tu? Piccolo iddio!” from Madame Butterfly during the talent portion of both pageants. And her win in the talent portion of the Miss America pageant helped pave the way for her overall victory.
* Post-Miss America, she moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music. As Miss America, she performed for the troops and said that inspired her first single, “Soldier On,” about women in the military.
* A Georgia native, she also released a cover of “Georgia on My Mind.” And she followed up that debut single with a six-song EP called “Nicotine.” She debuted it at an EP release concert in Macon, Ga., in September 2017.
* None of those songs are available on streaming sites now. But you can find versions of some of them on Betty’s YouTube channel, including the single “Sway,” which she wrote for her then fiance Spencer “Spinny” Maxwell. Check out “Sway” below.
* In an old website bio, Betty says she began singing at a young age, performing songs like “Harper Valley PTA” with her father’s band.
* She began professional vocal lessons at age 14 and also studied music at Mercer University. She said Linda Rondstadt was among her musical inspirations.
* Betty married Maxwell, first eloping in 2017, then having a formal ceremony about five months later, as they explain in one of their Betty and Spinny video blogs on YouTube.
* In their latest blog, they discuss a much more serious issue: Coping with tragedy. Specifically, the suicide of Spencer’s mom just before Christmas in 2018.
