Valerie Marie from American Idol Season 20
American Idol returns to ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27. Here’s more on Valerie Marie.
* Her full name is Valerie Marie Alonso and she’s a 17-year-old bilingual singer-songwriter from Miami, Fla.
* According to her bio on Songcast, Valerie began singing, playing ukulele and playing piano around age 9.
* Her songwriting began when she would write poems in her journal every day, then add melodies to turn them into songs.
* At the time she wrote her YouTube bio, she had recorded 25 originals with “many more to come.”
* Valerie has released two singles — a song she wrote called “Ghost” in 2020 and “Mi Amor” in March. You can check out the music video for “Mi Amor” below.
* On Instagram, her cover of “Talking to the Moon” is accompanied by the acknowledgment that Bruno Mars in one of her biggest inspirations. “He has incredible technique and control, AND he also has an incredible gift in songwriting,” she writes.
* In 2021, Valerie was recognized by the National Young Arts Foundation for her vocal ability. At the time, she was enrolled in the Biomedical Science Academy at TERRA Environmental Research Institute, a magnet school in Miami.
* Valerie also has a popular TikTok with more than 90,000 followers and more than 2 million likes. A video of her singing “Never Enough” while lying on her back and still impressing with her range attracted more than 3 million views alone.
