Nicolina Bozzo provided one of the highlights of American Idol’s Season 20 premiere with her stirring performance of “She Used to be Mine” by Sara Bareilles.

The performance earned Nicolina a unanimous gold ticket to Hollywood Week. Heck, she even got a standing ovation from Idol’s superstar panel of judges.

Nicolina’s an 18-year-old from Toronto, Canada, who has more than 200,000 followers on her TikTok and released a three-song debut EP called “Moving On” last year.

Here’s what she told Idol Chatter about her audition and her music.

Idol Chatter: How did you wind up auditioning for American Idol Season 20 and what made you decide this year would be a good time to do so?

Nicolina: I ended up auditioning for American Idol after my social media started growing. I figured this season would be the perfect season for me because of my recent growth on social media and I was right! All of my TikTok followers have been so supportive of my Idol journey and I can’t wait to see the next steps.

Idol Chatter: I listened to a podcast where you said “Waitress” is one of your favorite musicals? Why did you choose “She Used to Be Mine” as your audition song?

Nicolina: I chose She Used To Be Mine not only because of my love for the musical Waitress but because I was able to connect to this song on an emotional level. I feel every word in this song and am able to relate to it deeply.

Idol Chatter: What was that audition process like compared to what you expected?

Nicolina: I expected the audition process to be a lot more cutthroat, but it really wasn’t! I made SO many friends at the audition and was able to connect with so many amazing humans who share a passion for music.

Idol Chatter: How did you initially get started in music and at what point did you decide it was something you wanted to seriously pursue?

Nicolina: I have been singing all my life but really started training and putting in the work at age 14. It wasn’t until I was about 16 years old that I really knew that singing was something I wanted to make a career out of.

Idol Chatter: You’ve already released an EP. How would you describe the original music you create?

Nicolina: “I would describe my music as emotional. Even though I have written and released songs that may seem more upbeat they all convey an emotion. I write my songs when I go through something. When I can’t talk about how I feel, I will try to put my thoughts and feeling into song.
