Mycle Wastman, Season 3, The Voice

Meet Mycle Wastman of Team Cee Lo on The Voice

Mycle Wastman lost both of his parents at a young age, his father to bone cancer and his mother to a respiratory disorder.

As a result, he was raised by his grandfather, who passed away a week and a half before his audition on The Voice.

Those losses sent a message to Mycle, 40, of Seattle, Wash., who says he was in the military and worked construction but “just didn’t find the happiness I was looking for.”

“Seeing my parents die young taught me there are no guarantees in life,” he told The Voice. “You’ve gotta do what you love. And music is what I love.”

He performed the soulful “Let’s Stay Together” on The Voice, prompting all three male judges to turn around.

And, yes, there was a sense of surprise when they did so because, as Mycle admits, “I don’t look like I sing.”

“You’ve got the whole spectrum, the total package. I’m most excitied about you of anyone else (we’ve met) today,” said Cee Lo Green, the guy Mycle chose as his coach.

What the show didn’t show: His Voice bio tells us Mycle plays guitar, bass and drums. His pre-Voice music is evidence that he’s much more than a white guy who can sing soul music. He released a soul album in 2008 called “The Beautiful Stay.” He released a much more versatile album, “I’m All Over It” in September 2011. The title track is brilliant, the first song I’m come across from a Season 3 Voice artist that was so good I had to download it immediately. Both albums are on iTunes. You can learn more about Mycle on his website and listen to more of his music here and here. (One song is embedded below.)

Editor’s Note: Check back for live blogs once the battle rounds begin on The Voice.
