Chris Daughtry, Idols at awards shows

Daughtry vs. Jonas Brothers and an award for Idol

Paula Abdul arrives for Kids' Choice AwardsA couple of weeks back, Chris Daughtry posted a vlog encouraging kids to vote for the band Daughtry as favorite musical group in the 2009 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.

There was just one problem. One of the other nominees in the category was the phenomenon known as the Jonas Brothers.

Predictably enough, the Jonas Brothers walked away with the award at the 22nd annual awards ceremony Saturday night. It marked the second straight year they received the honor.

But the news wasn’t all bad for fans of American Idol.

The show won for the second straight year as the kids’ favorite reality TV show. American Idol also won in the favorite TV show category in 2007; the year before reality shows were split into a separate category.

Receiving the award on American Idol’s behalf were season seven runnerup David Archuleta and judge Paula Abdul (pictured in the AP photo at right).

Kelly Clarkson is the only Idol contestant to win a music category at the Kids' Choice AwardsPaula has a history with the show. She was its first Hall of Fame recipient back in 1991, before the birth of Idol. She also hosted the show in 1992.

Surprisingly, given the show’s popularity with kids, only one Idol contestant has snagged a Kids’ Choice Award — Kelly Clarkson as favorite female singer back in 2006.

Oh, well, better luck next year, Chris. You have a second album coming out, and maybe the Jonas Brothers phenomenon will have faded by next spring when the awards show rolls around again.
