Expect a tamer Adam Lambert on Ellen Tuesday

But don’t expect a repeat of his performance on the American Music Awards when he shows up on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” (4 p.m. WHP Channel 21).

He’ll be singing “Whataya Want From Me,” a song of a tamer sort and one that lends itself to a tamer interpretation.

“AMA performance was a one time event,” Adam told his fans in a Twitter tweet this afternoon. “Goin(g) in a new direction now. Focus back on the music.”

“Don’t worry friends: I’m still gonna be me,” he added later. “Always. W/o apologies. Just gonna experiment differently w(ith) how I present myself.”

And, finally: “Thank you all for your kind and supportive tweets. Means more than you can imagine. It was a looong week.”

Just who’s to blame for that, Adam?

Meanwhile, critics are sort of divided when it comes to Adam’s debut album. No one is questioning his vocals or the talent he had helping him with the album (Pink co-wrote the tune he’ll sing on “Ellen;” another album cut, “Fever,” was co-written by Lady Gaga).

Some are questioning whether Adam played it too safe with the album.

Personally, I like the album much more than Adam’s explanation for his AMA antics. Sorry, it’s a bit difficult to swallow the got “carried away” with the moment line. Or the one about how he’s just learning the importance of consistency between rehearsals and live performances.

This, coming from a guy who spent years and years in theater? Whose knowledge of stage and theatrics gave him such an edge over the other performers on Idol in season eight? From a guy who had to know a “carried away” moment like that one early in his AMA performance would have earned him a quick exit from American Idol?

In another interview in which Adam talks about his album and his AMA performance on Sirius radio. “I’m just glad people are talking about me,” Adam says.
