After The Voice, New Voice Music

Jacquie Lee is back with a new EP and video

Lee made a name for herself on The Voice by belting out covers like “I Put a Spell on You” with confidence and maturity well beyond her 16 years.

Now 17, the Season 5 runner-up just released a five-track debut EP that shows she can do more than belt out classics made famous by someone else.

She also just released the video for her debut single “Broken Ones,” which came out in May.

The EP features three other originals — catchy pop tunes “Tears Fall” and “Drown Me in Your Love” and the ballad “Right Love — that showcase Jacquie’s vocal versatility.

None of the originals fall into the bubble-gum pop category you might expect from an adorable teen fresh off a reality TV singing competition. Even the EP cover seems deliberately thoughtful rather than cute.

But then, the depth of the “Broken Ones” title track is what made her decide to record the song.

“I love the depth of the song and how it can relate to people on so many levels,” she told me during a late-June interview. “Definitely, that’s my type of music.

“For me, it was a song that touched my heart because, obviously, high school is really hard to fit in all the time. It comforted me a little bit by saying you should embrace your weirdness and shouldn’t try to hide it. I feel out of place sometimes.”

Of course, one place Jacquie Lee doesn’t feel out of place is the stage, and she’ll be sharing one with Meghan Trainor of “All About that Bass” fame and Bebe Rexha at Paramount’s Hot New Artists Show on Thursday, Nov. 13 in New York.
