Meet India Carney of The Voice Season 8

India Carney Her audition: India Carney, 21, of Brooklyn, N.Y., sang Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind,” saying it’s a song that would make her “feel at home” on The Voice stage. Her voice made an immediate impression on Christina Aguilera, who turned around on the second line. She was followed by the rest of the coaches, giving India the only four-chair turn in the third blind audition episode. Christina called her “a vocal beast.” And India joined Team Christina.

Her background: Her mom works in finance and her dad is a teacher, so they aren’t necessarily musical, but India says she’s spent most of her life pursuing musical education. At age 11, she started looking for middle schools with musical programs. She wound up graduating from LaGuardia Arts High School (The “FAME” School) in New York City. She’s now in her final year in the music department at UCLA, wondering what she’s going to do once she graduates. She’s hoping The Voice helps provide that answer. And while she’s been classically trained in music, she told The Voice she has always wanted “a pop coach.”

What the show didn’t show: In her Voice video, India says she’s been singing since age 2. There was always a piano in her home, India says, and as her parents realized she was interested in music, they began signing her up for classes. She’s majoring in voice performance at UCLA where she has also served as music director of the a cappella group, the UCLA Scattertones. And though her preferred genre is R&B/pop, her Facebook bio tells us she’s a versatile performer who has also done jazz, blues, opera, gospel and musical theater. And she’s performed in places as renown as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall, not to mention the The Rose Bowl. In February 2013, she launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a mini-EP called “Heartbroken.” You can check out that song here.

On picking Christina: “Christina Aguilera is someone I grew up with. To be able to learn from her and be coached by her is an invaluable experience that doesn’t come along every day.”

On iTunes: Her Voice performances and a track called “No” from “Sounds of Young Arts / 2012.”

Update: In the battle round, she was matched with Clinton Washington. They performed “Stay.” Christina declared India the winner; Clinton was stolen by Adam Levine. In the knockout round, she was pitted against Joe Tolo. India turned in the best vocal of night three of the knockouts, singing “Big White Room” by Jessie J. She was declared the winner.

Live playoffs: She performed Christina Aguilera’s “Hurt” and was voted into the Season 8 finals by Voice viewers. The song landed at number 73 on the iTunes’ singles chart.

Top 12: She performed “Take Me to Church.” The song landed at number 49 on the iTunes singles chart, ninth best from the show. It was number 17 on the pop chart when voting ended.

Top 10: She advanced to the Top 8 on fan voting. Her version of “Run to You” hit number on 45 on iTunes, fourth best of the night’s 10 songs.

Top 8: She landed in the bottom three with Corey Kent White and Hannah Kirby, but received the instant save. On performance night, she sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” which hit 30 on iTunes, sixth best of eight songs from the night.

Top 6: She landed in the bottom two with Team Christina colleague Kimberly Nichole, but earned a second straight instant save. Her performance night songs — “Glory” and “Lay Me Down” hit number 45 and 65, respectively, on iTunes. They were the seventh and 10th most popular among 12 songs from the show.

Top 5: Her well-received performance of “The Earth Song” landed at number 29 on iTunes; her cover of “Gravity” checked in at number 39. They were the seventh and ninth most popular of the 10 songs from Top 5 night.
