Ruben Studdard, Trenyce up for a Grammy, too

Trenyce Cobbins (left) and Ruben Studdard (2nd from left) are among the performers on the Grammy nominated cast album for Ain't Misbehavin'.

Seems I missed two Idols a couple of weeks ago when I blogged about former contestants who had received Grammy nominations.

Hey, it’s a heck of a long list of nominees.

Buried in Field 19 (Musical Shows), Category 80 is the cast album for the 30th anniversary rendition of “Ain’t Misbehavin’ — The ‘Fats Waller’ Musical.”

The show, of course, featured Ruben Studdard in a lead role and stopped at the Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center earlier this year. And it also featured Trencye Cobbins, the fifth-place finisher on season two of Idol.

The 25-track cast album features Ruben performing “Your Feet’s Too Big,” Trenyce singing “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now,” and several other numbers in which they lend vocals.

It also features the duet “Honeysuckle Rose” by Ruben and Frenchie King. When I interviewed Ruben back in April (link here) prior to the York show, he pointed to that as his favorite number.

Ruben just released a new holiday song, “Christmas In Your Arms,” which you can hear here (Windows Media Player) or here (Real Player).

Trenyce has been keeping busy, too. She was in D.C. in late November, providing vocals for a “Ballroom With a Twist” show. Last weekend, she appeared in the American Christmas show in the Napa Valley. (A webcast of that show, which featured 12 former Idol contestants, is now available for $3.99 by going here.)

And, Saturday night, sounds like Trenyce had an adventurous night in Slippery Rock. Don’t believe me. Just check out her Twitter feed.

The other Idols up for Grammys, in case you missed the blog: Kelly Clarkson for best pop vocal (the album, “All I Ever Wanted); Carrie Underwood for best remale country vocal (“Just Because”) and best country collaboration with vocals (“I Told You So” with Randy Travis) and Mandisa for best pop/contemporary gospel album (“Freedom”).

As for “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” it will be up against “Hair,” “9 to 5, The Musical,” “Shrek, The Musical” and “West Side Story” in the Grammy chase for best musical show album.

Here’s the link to the entire list of Grammy nominees.
