Among the battle round matches we didn’t get to see last week on The Voice was a match between two of the youngest singers on the show.

Aaliyah Rose and Savannah Leighton performed “Treat You Better” by Shawn Mendes in a Team Gwen battle.

When the singing ended, Aaliyah was declared the winner.

Because she wasn’t stolen, Savannah was eliminated.

After the battle, Aaliyah said she and Savannah learned all the steals had already been used when they hit the stage.

“I was very proud of Savannah and I and how hard we worked together to make it an amazing performance,” Aaliyah told Voice Views. “We didn’t look at it as a battle but as a duet that we wanted to slay.

“Savannah is one of my best friends so I really did hope that one of us would make it with Gwen and the other would be stolen. We didn’t know that there were no steals left when we sang.

“Gwen said she chose me to move forward because my style and voice is so unique,” Aaliyah added. “I am so humbled to be moving forward and know that Savannah will do awesome things with her career.”

said she was pleased with Gwen’s song choice, partly because it was a fun song to perform, partly because it’s a song with which she was already familiar.

She also liked the reggae arrangement used for the battle.

“I felt like the performance couldn’t have been better,” she said. “Savannah and I had so much fun and we really left it all out there.

“We were dancing and trying to give all the sass and attitude that Gwen wanted to see. I feel like our harmonies were really tight and our voices blended together awesome.”

Savannah, 16 when she auditioned, had turned two chairs with her cover of Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally.”

Aaliyah, 14 when she auditioned, turned just one despite an impressive rendition of “Rise Up” by Andra Day. She’s a YouTube star with more than 11.5 million views on her videos there and performed at the Radio Disney Music Awards in 2014.

Her victory means all three Season 12 singers who would have been too young to audition in Season 11 have made it to the knockout round.

Quizz Swanigan was a battle round winner for Team Alicia. Brennley Brown lost her Team Blake battle to Lauren Duski, but was stolen by Gwen Stefani.

The Voice lowered the audition age from 15 to 13 for Season 12.
