Caleb Johnson ‘holding on’ gospel style as he prepares new EP

Johnson is releasing a new EP later this year.

In the meantime, American Idol’s Season 13 winner has given fans a taste of what’s to come by releasing a rousing, gospel-tinged single called “Holding On” that you can listen to at right.

The 24-year-old from Asheville, N.C., explained the inspiration behind the song in a recent visit to his hometown radio station.

“People go through a lot of stuff in life,” he says in an interview you can watch here. “There’s moments you’re in your darkest of times and you don’t know what to believe or what’s going on. But the main thing is you hold on to that little bit of faith to get you through.

“You can also take it in the form of a relationship where you go through so much turmoil and all this other stuff, but you just hold on to the last because you love the person so much.”

The tune is the lead single from that upcoming EP, which can be pre-ordered through Caleb’s Pledge Music campaign.

He’s offering all sorts of goodies to folks who support the project, like a chance to join him on a “fun-filled” tour of a brewery in Asheville.

Or you can just pre-order a download of that new EP for as little as $10.

The release will be Caleb’s second since Idol. His debut album, “Testify,” debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200 and number nine on the Billboard rock albums chart, but was not a sales success.

Caleb will also be joining dozens of other past Idol contestants on the show’s final episode Thursday night. Check back then for a live blog of the event.
