The rest of the story about David Cook and the Race for Hope

American Idol spends in-show airtime to hawk Ford and Coca-Cola projects.

Why couldn’t they have taken just a few more seconds Thursday night to provide more information on David Cook’s involvement in
D.C.’s Race for Hope?

Like making it clear that the race is this Sunday? And that there’s still time to donate to help the cause?

But they didn’t, so here are the details.

The 5K Race for Hope to raise money for brain cancer research takes place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday at Freedom Plaza in D.C.
In order to donate, simply follow this link.

“I’m very honored to be a part of it, given the fact that I lost my brother to a brain tumor in 2009,” David said Thursday on Idol, during an interview clip that aired prior to the performance of his new single, “Laying Me Low.”

“The platform Idol gave me is something I’ve been able to use to hopefully raise a little awareness and some funds for a cure,” he added, rather humbly.

I say humbly because David has participated for the past four years and his team has raised more than $500,000 toward the cause during that time.

In fact, his team was the top fund-raiser for three straight years from 2009 to 2011. Last year, David’s team raised more than $80,500, placing second in the fund-raising race.

This year, his team has a goal of $80,000. As I’m wrapping up this blog late Friday morning, he’s just passed that mark and the fund-raising total is still climbing. (Update: As of 7 p.m. Saturday, pledges had topped $83,500.)

Meanwhile, if you missed the clip of David on Idol last night or his performance of “Laying Me Low,” here it is.
