The sibling trio Girl Named Tom certainly kicked off The Voice blind auditions in fine fashion.
In Monday’s Season 21 premiere, Bekah, Caleb and Joshua Liechty showed off their sibling harmonies on “Hopelessly Helping” by Crosby, Stills & Nash.
They earned almost immediate chair turns from Kelly Clarkson and John Legend. By the time they finished performing, all four of the show’s superstar coaches were facing in their direction.
They opted to join Team Kelly as they began their quest to become the first group ever to win The Voice.
Here’s what Girl Named Tom told Voice Views about their blind audition experience.
Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice?
Bekah: I have had a lifelong, hidden dream of making it to the big stage with my voice. When we started our band, I never felt right about going off and auditioning by myself. But, after seeing the joy our music brought people in the small venues we were playing, I had an increasing desire to get our music to more ears. At the same time, I became aware that what our trio had together was far beyond anything I could do myself. So, with this newfound confidence, I somehow convinced the boys to audition with me and see what happens!
Voice Views: Why did you decide to perform “Hopelessly Hoping” for your audition song? Is it one you’d performed together before?
Caleb: When choosing a song for our blind, we knew we wanted to focus on 3 things, in the following order of importance: 1. We wanted three-part harmony throughout. We figured we could show off individual voices later in the competition if our harmony could turn a chair. 2. A song with a positive message that we could all relate to. 3. A song with a classic/stripped down vibe, preferably from the 1960s era of music that we all respect so much.
We first learned “Helplessly Hoping” in Vermont at the beginning of our self-organized, nationwide tour in 2019. It did not take long after we hit the road for it to be requested, no, demanded that we learn this song!

Voice Views: How would you describe that blind audition experience?
Caleb: They told us we’d blackout during the performance. While I do remember a few things, it’s all very foggy and chopped up. That morning, from waking up at 5:30am to arriving at the stage and singing for four celebrities, was SO INTENSE. We are grateful that the adrenaline of the moment, the love between us, and the encouragement of the backstage workers got us through.
Joshua: The wildest thing about the blind auditions is how much time we spent preparing vs how quickly the actual audition went by. We spent an entire month working on nothing but that blind audition, and then we had 2 minutes to impress the coaches. Such a pressure packed situation.
Bekah: I’m so glad we had each other to lean on when we were feeling real nervous. Sometimes Josh was bouncing off the walls, Caleb was sitting with his eyes closed, and I’d be right in between, emotionally. I think it was good to have a triangle of emotional support.
Voice Views: Why did you decide to join Team Kelly? And did you all agree on which coach to select?
Joshua: Going into the blind audition, we were simply hoping to turn a single chair, and didn’t expect to have the option to choose between all four, but obviously we were ecstatic that we had that opportunity. While practicing, we kept going over who we would choose if given the choice, and the list was pretty fluid in the weeks leading up to the Blind. Each coach presented unique reasons why we would work really well together, and it was super difficult to make the decision after they had all given their pitch.
We ended up going with Kelly because she seemed to be the most enthusiastic about us (as well as the first to turn) and we thought that could bode well for the future. We didn’t exactly agree on who to choose with all of us leaning in different directions, but we wanted to give Bekah the ultimate decision since this whole thing was her dream in the first place.
Though she herself was leaning Blake, she decided to go with Kelly, which is the coach I wanted to choose. Caleb was leaning towards John. We were all a little afraid of how much energy Ariana would give her contestants because of her overwhelming schedule as one of the biggest celebrities in the world. She was an unknown, but wow, she has really proven herself to her team!
