Fittingly, Camila landed two of those four-chair turn artists — Morgan Myles and Orlando Mendez — even though the former has released country music and the latter now considers himself a country artist.
The other four-chair turn, Omar Cardona, opted to join Team Legend. Other singers earning spots on the show Monday included Ian Harrison, David Andrew, Jay Allen, Emma Brooke and Kate Kalvach, though the show ended before revealing which coach Kate chose.
And something to remember: The Voice introduced us to three artists who did not turn chairs. That means there will be absolutely no excuse — none at all — if the show montages some of the 56 artists who did so later on.
Remember, Season 22 continues Tuesday with another two-hour audition episode. Here’s my recap of Monday, complete with my picks to best performances of the night.
I’ll be adding videos of tonight’s performances when they become available. In the meantime, follow the links if you want to learn more about the singers and the music they’ve already released.
Links to profiles of all 56 contestants who nabbed spots on Season 22 appear below.
BEST OF THE NIGHT
Morgan Myles, 35, of Nashville, “Hallelujah” — Camila Cabello and Gwen Stefani turned almost immediately, joined by John Legend and Blake Shelton soon after. If anything, Morgan’s performance got stronger and more soulful once all four coaches were facing her. She only has three coaches to chose from though because Camila blocked Gwen. John complimented Morgan on her “piercing beautiful notes,” and called it one of the best blind auditions he’d seen in a long time. Camila complimented her on her “gorgeous tone” and ability to sing with “her soul.” Blake applauded her for her believability. Gwen noted how much help Blake provides to his artists after the show. Morgan opted to join Team Camila.
RUNNERS-UP
David Andrew, 25, of Gallatin, Tenn., “Falling” by Harry Styles — Dang, David showed off a great tone and range from the opening night. Eight performance in, this was easily the night’s vocal so far by a guy. And it earned him chair turns from John Legend and Gwen Stefani. John said he loved the drama and soulfulness in David’s performance. Gwen called the end of the performance “mind-blowing.” David decided to join Team Legend.
Jay Allen, 36, of Nashville, Tenn, “”Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson — Jay turns in a solid country vocal. Between that and his back story, my guess is he’s a guy who could win The Voice. He enticed chair turns from Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. Blake said Jay sounded “great” and complimented his approach. Gwen called his performance “so beautiful.” Jay pulls a shocker and joins Team Gwen.
ALSO MADE THE SHOW
Omar Cardona, 33, Orlando, “Separate Ways” by Journey — Omar’s energetic performance prompted an almost immediate chair turn from John Legend. Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani followed quickly. A big note at the end enticed Camila to turn as well, making Omar the second four-chair turn of Season 22. John complimented him on his “crazy range” and said he’s the kind of artist who could win The Voice. Omar joined Team Legend.
Ian Harrison, 20, of Columbus, Ohio, “The Night We Met” by Lord Heron — Ian turned in a heartfelt performance, showing off unique vocals. Midway through the song, Blake Shelton turned. Gwen Stefani and John Legend later followed. John applauded the character of Ian voice, calling it “enchanting.” Blake called it a “powerful” performance. Gwen appreciated Ian’s ability to show his heart through the performance. Ian joined Team Gwen.
Emma Brooke, 19 of Lyman, S.C., “California Dreaming” by The Mamas and the Papas — A fabulous opening prompted an almost immediate chair turn from John Legend. Midway through the song, Gwen Stefani turned as well. Despite a great ending glory note, Emma couldn’t entice the other coaches to turn. John complimented her on a powerful tone, but said he wants to see Emma cut loose vocally. Emma opted to join Team Legend.
Orlando Mendez, 26, of Miami, Fla., “Beer Never Broke My Heart” by Luke Combs — Orlando cut loose on a rowdy country song, working the stage like a veteran performer. And that energetic performance was enough to turn four chairs, starting with Camila Cabello and Gwen Stefani. Camila complimented Orlando on a special tone she could hear on the radio. Blake pitched his country roots, of course. Gwen said he got better and better as the performance went on. Orlando decided to join Team Camila.
Kate Kalvach, 27, of Oklahoma City, Ok., “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves — Showing off a really nice tone, Kate earned late chair turns from Camila Cabello, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Blake said Kate got stronger as the performance went on. Camila said she loves Kate’s tone and thinks she could be the secret weapon on her team. Gwen called the performance “so pretty.” And as Kate begs his hometown girl to select his team, the show ended without revealing which coach Kate selected.
NO CHAIRS
Tianna Goss, 28, of Los Angeles, “Say It Right” — Tianna was all sorts of pitchy and no coaches turned. Keep track in case montages come later, Voice fans. That’s one contestant the show introduced us to who didn’t make the cut.
Alexis McLaughlin, 25, of Texas, “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake — Alexis showed off lots of energy and a nice rasp in her voice, but didn’t get a chair turn. Which was a little surprising. But that’s two non-contestants the show has already introduced us to. The Voice had better not montage anyone in Season 22.
JJ Hill, 34, of Pilot Rock, Oregon, “Inside Out” — His magic spell didn’t work. It might have helped if he didn’t sound out of breath for a good deal of the performance. No one turned. And that’s three non-contestants we’ve met.
